This is the first blog in a series we call “Worship Wednesday.” We hope with this series of blogs we will introduce you to worship songs that will lead you to worship and praise God in a greater way, with both old and new songs. With these songs we will focus on how they point us to who God is, what He has done in Jesus, and what He calls us as His people to do. We hope to post some songs that may be teaching false doctrines about God, so that we can promote being discerning to what we are listening to and being mindful of Scripture when we sing praises to our God.
The first song in our series is a song written by Bob Kauflin. Kauflin is a Pastor at Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville and the Director of Sovereign Grace Music. The mission of Sovereign Grace Music from their own words on their website is as follows: “The mission of Sovereign Grace Music is to produce Christ-exalting songs and training for the Church from our local churches. We call it Sound+Doctrine.” They have served faithfully their own church, as well as the universal church, with songs that bring us to worship God and exalt Him.
The first song that we are highlighting is “O Great God” written by Bob Kauflin in 2006. One glance at the words and you can see the mission statement of Sovereign Grace come to life. We see the progression of the Christian life and the gospel on display. First, God is “the great God of highest heav’n” who owns all of creation as the supreme Creator (Genesis 1-2). He is the one who has by His own words created everything “ex nihilo” (“Out of nothing”). In the Garden of Eden there was a war waged against God and His good creation through the sin of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3; Romans 5:12-21). Secondly, we see that the Spirit is the one who gives life to those who trust in Jesus in Jesus, the one who “loved and purchased” us on the cross (Mark 10:45; Romans 5:8; 1 Peter 1:18). The Spirit in this new life makes us new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17) who enlighten the eyes of our heart to understand God’s Word (Ephesians 1:18). Thirdly, we are to “live a life that is dependent on Your (God’s) grace.” Every day of our life is to be wholly dependent God, dying to ourselves (Luke 9:23), and entrusting ourselves to God who is our Shepherd (John 10:10-18; 1 Peter 2:25). Our every “thought and deed” we are to use in worship and praise to God (Romans 12:1-2; Colossians 3:17). Lastly, we look forward to the day we have “endless hope and peace” with God in heaven when we will praise Him endlessly (Revelation 7:9-12, 19:1-8)! Our hope is to be with Him in His presence without the presence and corruption of sin and death (Revelation 21:1-4).
We can praise the Lord for the work of Sovereign Grace and Bob Kauflin and what they have meant to the body of Christ. They have led many believers to a greater worship of the God we love and serve! You can listen to this song by following the Youtube link attached to this post. I am incredibly thankful that we will be introducing this song in our worship service this Sunday morning. We at Grafton Baptist Church have an incredible team who puts in lots of work to prepare the songs we sing each week to make sure we have Christ-exalting songs! I am thankful for the work they have put in to be ready for this Sunday and introducing this incredible song! If you need a place to worship, please join us this Sunday at 10:45a.m.! We hope to worship with you this week.
